Avi is an video format. You can't have videos as avatar, you have to have a pic. Most pics are in .jpg, but .gif allows you to have a moving picture (or animation). The animation can be supah long, but if I used it as avata thenthe forum would say that it's to big -___- So a animation is indeed a moving picture (you can even add sound to some of them I think...) but it's still just a picture, no video.
